Nyong Wins Silver for Team Nigeria in Weightlifting

Ruth Asuquo Nyong, a 20-year-old Nigerian weightlifter, secured a silver medal in the women's 48kg category at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. This achievement contributed to Team Nigeria's overall medal count of three gold and three silver medals on the opening day of competition.

In the Snatch event, Nyong successfully lifted 71kg and 75kg but failed to lift 77kg. In the Clean and Jerk, after two unsuccessful attempts at 93kg, she managed to lift the weight on her third attempt.

Her total score of 168 points, combining both Snatch and Clean & Jerk, marked a personal best for her. The gold medal was won by India's Mirabai Chanu Saikhom with a total score of 190, while Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry took home the bronze with 167 points.

The weightlifting events will continue, with Nigerian lifters Favour Omonigho Agboro, Rafiatu Lawal, Edidiong Joseph Umoafia, and Onome Omolola Didih scheduled to compete.
