NYSC Tightens Safety Measures as Corps Members Begin Service Year

Amid persistent insecurity across numerous states, the National Youth Service Corps has introduced updated safety protocols for its current batch of corps members. In Kebbi State, three local government areas—Augi, Arewa, and Sakaba—have been placed off-limits due to security risks, which has led to a sharp decline in corps member postings throughout the state.
Bala Dabo, the state coordinator for NYSC operations in Kebbi, revealed intentions to shift the orientation camp from Basura to Dakingari, which falls under Jega local government area, to ensure better security conditions. Across Jigawa State, approximately 2,000 Batch B Stream corps members have received concrete pledges from NYSC leadership guaranteeing their protection during the year of service.
These assurances emerge as heightened security challenges have prompted the scheme to cancel swearing-in ceremonies in several states. Niger State experienced comparable ceremony cancellations following confirmed security incidents, reflecting how widespread this challenge has become nationally.
Directives on political conduct have also been issued by NYSC leadership to all corps members serving during this period. During an address at the Iyana Ipaja orientation camp in Lagos, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu—the NYSC's Director General—urged service members to maintain distance from electoral activities as the nation prepares for 2027 elections.
Nafiu stressed that participants must refrain from party membership, campaign involvement, and attending political gatherings, underscoring that institutional neutrality remains essential to the scheme's integrity. The scheme's integrated strategy demonstrates stronger ties with security agencies working to mitigate emerging threats.
Though the restriction of postings in specific Kebbi zones has reduced placements in healthcare and education sectors within that state, corps members continue to be deployed countrywide. Enhanced camp regulations and bolstered security measures now govern orientation operations in states where activities continue.
