Peter Obi Condemns EFCC Raid on Uyo Teaching Hospital

Peter Obi condemned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) raid on the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, which occurred on Tuesday. He described the deployment of teargas within the hospital premises as a thoughtless act that endangered the lives of patients and medical staff.

Obi's statement, signed on Thursday, expressed deep concern over the EFCC's conduct, which reportedly involved storming the hospital without a warrant and identifying themselves. The operation was connected to an investigation into alleged fraud involving medical reports.

The raid resulted in injuries to several staff members, including the arrest of Professor Effiong Ekp, a cardiothoracic surgeon and deputy chairman of the Medical Advisory Council. Following the incident, medical personnel announced an indefinite strike until their demands were met.

The Nigerian Medical Association and the Association of Resident Doctors have called for disciplinary action against the EFCC operatives involved and emphasized the need for respect and dignity in the healthcare profession.
