Ogun Assembly Exonerates Oluomo, Commutes Impeachment

On March 31, 2026, the Ogun State House of Assembly passed a resolution exonerating former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo from allegations of embezzlement of funds, which were mentioned in the report of the ad hoc Committee regarding his removal from office on January 23, 2024. The resolution followed the presentation of the committee's report by Deputy Speaker Lateefat Bolanle Ajayi.

The House determined that the embezzlement allegations were not part of the notice of removal served to Oluomo and could not be substantiated. The report acknowledged Oluomo's plea for exoneration and concluded that the allegations were withdrawn.

Consequently, the House resolved to commute Oluomo's impeachment into a resignation. Oluomo had been impeached by 18 out of 26 members of the Assembly during a sitting presided over by Deputy Speaker Ajayi, due to allegations of gross misconduct and financial misappropriation while he was attending a swearing-in ceremony for customary court judges.
