Ogun Government Lacks Authority to Suspend Awujale Process

Professor Fassy Adetokunboh Yusuf, Vice Chairman of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House of Ijebu-Ode and Baagbimo of Ijebu, asserted that the Ogun State Government does not have the legal authority to suspend the selection process for the vacant Awujale stool. This statement was made during a press conference organized by the Grand Council of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House to address controversies surrounding the leadership and the suspended selection process.

The Ogun State Government initially suspended the process on December 11, 2025, citing “procedural errors” and potential legal violations. The suspension was lifted on January 6, 2026, but was reinstated on January 20, 2026, due to petitions challenging the process.

The government justified its actions under the Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State, 2021. In response, Professor Yusuf indicated that the ruling house would file a lawsuit to contest the government's actions and mentioned that an open letter demanding an end to the suspension was sent to the government on May 3, 2026.
