Awujale Stool: Ruling House Sues Ogun State Officials

On August 21, 2026, a lawsuit was filed by the ruling house of the Awujale stool, represented by Chairman Otunba Abdulateef Adebayo Owoyemi, Deputy Chairman Otunba Adedokun Ajidagba, and Vice Chairman Prof. Chief Fassy Yusuf. The defendants include Ogun State Attorney-General Oluwasina Ogungbade, the Ogun State Executive Council, and members of the Awujale Afobaje/Kingmakers Council.

The claimants seek judicial clarification on whether the state government had the authority to prevent kingmakers from meeting to select a new monarch after the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona on July 13, 2025. They argue that the government’s actions on January 20, 2026, violated the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State, which governs the nomination and selection process.

The ruling house asserts that it completed its internal nomination process within the legal timeframe and questions the kingmakers' obligation to select a candidate from their submitted list. The court is also asked to determine if the selection process commenced based on notifications from Ijebu-Ode Local Government in December 2025 and January 2026.
