Ogun PDP Chieftain Advocates for Southern Presidency

Segun Showunmi, a chieftain of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, has publicly defended his decision to distance himself from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the PDP's presidential candidate in the 2019 and 2023 elections. Showunmi insists on the necessity of a southern presidency and asserts his constitutional right to political choice.

He recently visited President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which has drawn criticism. Showunmi, who previously served as Atiku's spokesperson during the 2019 presidential election, has declared his intention to contest for the Ogun State governorship seat.

He argues that power should remain in the south beyond 2027 to ensure peace and stability in Nigeria. In response to accusations from Kio Amachree, who made unsubstantiated claims against him, Showunmi warned of potential legal action and emphasized that his political engagements are legitimate and within his rights.
