Ondo Assembly Crisis: 24 Lawmakers Back Impeachment Move

The leadership crisis in the Ondo State House of Assembly intensified when Hon. Olawumi Fayemi-Obayelu announced that 24 of the 26 lawmakers now support the impeachment of Speaker Olamide Oladiji.

This marks an increase from the 21 lawmakers who initially signed the impeachment notice. Fayemi-Obayelu stated that the Speaker has lost the confidence of the majority of Assembly members.

She accused Oladiji of mishandling a House resolution and diverting electricity meters intended for lawmakers. The lawmakers have refrained from public comments to respect Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s intervention, but recent actions by the Speaker prompted them to restate their position.

The crisis is compounded by allegations regarding ₦44 million linked to the Ondo State Oil-Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), with claims that the Speaker altered the commission’s budget without proper approval. Oladiji has denied all allegations, labeling them as politically motivated.

The aggrieved lawmakers insist that legislative activities will not resume until the leadership issue is resolved.
