Ondo Speaker Olamide Oladiji Faces Impeachment Threat

Olamide Oladiji, the Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, is facing impeachment threats due to allegations regarding the handling of ₦44 million received from the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC). On Tuesday, 21 lawmakers secured signatures to support his removal, following claims that the funds were managed without the knowledge of other members.

Initial attempts to persuade Oladiji to resign voluntarily were unsuccessful, leading to intensified efforts for his impeachment. The controversy has revealed significant divisions within the 26-member Assembly, with accusations of financial misconduct directed at Oladiji, Deputy Speaker Ololade Gbegudu, and Clerk Benjamin Jaiyeola.

Hon. Dr. Olawumi Fayemi-Obayelu raised concerns about intimidation and threats against her due to her investigation into alleged corruption linked to the Assembly leadership. As of Tuesday evening, it remains uncertain whether impeachment proceedings will begin immediately or if political leaders will intervene to avert a confrontation.
