Adeleke Wins Osun Governorship Election with 511,067 Votes

On August 16, 2023, Professor Joshua Ogunwole, the Returning Officer for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), declared Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke, candidate of the Accord Party, the winner of the Osun State off-season governorship election held on August 15, 2023. Adeleke secured 511,067 votes, defeating Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered 444,815 votes.

Dr. Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) finished third with 17,180 votes, despite support from former state governor Rauf Aregbesola. The election was significant as it marked a defeat for the APC in a state considered a stronghold for the party, particularly as it is in Yorubaland, the home region of President Bola Tinubu.

Adeleke's victory was humorously attributed to his dancing skills, with a playful assertion that each dance step he took since his election in 2022 corresponded to a vote he received.
