Mahdi Shehu Warns Against One-Party Political Systems

Mahdi Shehu cautions political leaders against the promotion of a one-party system, asserting that such a path often results in failure and disgrace. He argues that true democracy is built on active citizen participation and the availability of multiple political parties.

Shehu highlights that a genuine democratic process guarantees adult franchise and regular elections, allowing citizens to hold leaders accountable for their governance. He notes that history has shown that leaders who dilute democratic principles to cling to power often face unpleasant circumstances when they eventually leave office.

Shehu cites global examples, including countries like China, North Korea, and Uganda, where opposition parties play little to no meaningful role. He warns that leaders who undermine the electoral process will ultimately face failure, as history does not favor stubborn rulers.

Shehu is currently associated with the APC, which governs 32 out of 36 states in Nigeria.
