OPay Threatens Legal Action Over Shutdown Rumor

OPay Digital Services Limited announced its intention to pursue legal action against an X user, Cute Hafserh, over a false publication claiming the company would shut down operations indefinitely from September 1, 2026. The statement, issued on Monday and signed by Chief Legal Counsel Akinfolabi Rokosu, described the claim as "false, malicious, unlawful, libellous and defamatory," asserting it caused reputational and commercial harm to OPay.

The company demanded that Hafserh delete the post, retract the statement, and issue an unreserved apology by 11:59 PM WAT on the same day. OPay emphasized the importance of verifying information before sharing and reassured customers that its operations were normal.

Following the company's warning, Hafserh deleted the original post and acknowledged the misinformation, apologizing for any inconvenience caused. OPay reiterated its commitment to communicate directly with customers regarding significant service updates.
