Taiwo Hassan's 'Ogogo' Name Origin Revealed in 2024

Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as "Ogogo," revealed the origin of his iconic stage name in a 2024 interview with City People. He explained that "Ogogo" was derived from a line in a family prayer and is part of his family's Oriki, a traditional Yoruba praise poetry.

Hassan began his acting career in 1981 as an Akede Oba, a performer responsible for reciting the Oriki of royalty and chiefs. His talent earned him the nickname "Olohun Iyo." As Yoruba home video productions gained popularity, he integrated self-eulogy into his performances, drawing from his family's praise lines.

Over time, "Ogogo" became an inseparable part of his identity. He was also a co-founder of the Odunfa Caucus, a theatre group that nurtured many celebrated Yoruba talents.

Hassan passed away on August 23, 2026, at the age of 66. His wife, Ajoke Taiwo, shared that he initially discouraged her from acting after their marriage.
