Sowore Accuses Police of Tear Gas Attack in Osun

Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, accused officers of the Nigeria Police Force of firing tear gas at him and his supporters while they were en route to Osogbo, Osun State, ahead of the August 15 governorship election. Sowore made this allegation in a post on his verified X account on Wednesday.

He stated that the incident occurred after a respectful discussion with the police, which turned confrontational as they resumed their journey. Despite the alleged attack, Sowore and his supporters continued to Osogbo, asserting that the police's intimidation tactics failed.

He criticized the police for not safeguarding the democratic process and instead creating fear among political actors. There was no immediate response from the Nigeria Police Force regarding the allegations.

Additionally, Governor Ademola Adeleke had previously called for the redeployment of the Osun State Commissioner of Police due to concerns over police conduct and neutrality ahead of the election.
