Osun Government and ASUU Dispute UNIOSUN VC Tenure Extension

The Osun State Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are at odds regarding the two-year tenure extension granted to Professor Clement Odunayo Adebooye, Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), by Governor Ademola Adeleke. The government asserts that the extension, which keeps Adebooye's tenure valid until January 2027, was executed legally.

In contrast, ASUU criticized the extension, claiming it breaches the Universities Miscellaneous Act as outlined in the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement. Following an Emergency National Executive Council meeting on September 5, 2026, ASUU directed its UNIOSUN branch to mobilize against what it termed a legal violation and plans to form a visitation team to investigate the circumstances of the extension.

The Osun State Government, represented by Commissioner Kolapo Alimi, defended the decision, stating it was based on legislative amendments to the UNIOSUN Establishment Law and not arbitrary. The government emphasized that it respects the rights of university unions but will not allow them to overstep their legal boundaries.
