Osun State Government Defends VC Tenure Extension Amid ASUU Dispute

The Osun State Government has urged the Osun State University community to avoid actions that could create tension regarding the two-year tenure extension for Vice-Chancellor Prof. Clement Adebooye. This extension, announced by Senator Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke, has been contested by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which stated that the extension violates university law.

Following an emergency National Executive Council meeting on September 5, ASUU mandated its UNIOSUN branch to mobilize against the extension and formed a visitation team to address the issue within two weeks. In response, the Osun State Government, through Commissioner Kolapo Alimi, emphasized that the governance of the university is regulated by law and that the decision regarding Adebooye's tenure was made in accordance with statutory responsibilities.

The government clarified that Adebooye's current tenure is valid until January 2027 and that the extension was supported by legislative amendments to the Osun State University Establishment Law.
