Osun State Government Defends ASUU Agreement Implementation

The Osun State government has expressed discontent with the National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for failing to acknowledge its efforts in implementing the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement at Osun State University (UNIOSUN). In a statement by the commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, the government asserted that it had implemented the agreement even before the federal government and had begun paying the applicable arrears.

The ASUU's emergency meeting on September 5, 2026, in Abuja, commended several state governments for their compliance but notably excluded Osun State. Governor Ademola Adeleke was cited as the second governor to approve the salary adjustments after Ekiti State.

The Osun State government deemed the omission as mischief and firmly rejected any claims of indifference towards the welfare of academic staff or failure to meet obligations under the agreement. Additionally, the government dismissed suggestions that the extension of the current vice-chancellor's tenure was an arbitrary executive action.
