Panic Over Global Food Initiative Leads to Looting in Osogbo

The Global Food Initiative, a food distribution scheme in Osogbo, Osun State, faced a crisis when its operators suddenly disappeared, prompting looting by hoodlums who exploited the situation. The looters entered the store under the pretense of sympathizing with customers whose orders were not fulfilled.

A local radio anchor had previously warned listeners that the initiative was a scam, predicting the operators would flee, which incited panic among customers. On the day of the incident, a trailer full of food items was scheduled for distribution, but the operators did not open the store due to fears of violence.

Customers, including local traders, had invested significant amounts in the scheme, which offered essential food items at prices significantly lower than market rates. As frustration grew outside the locked premises, many customers feared their investments were lost for good, with some displaying receipts for unfulfilled orders.
