Garba Shehu Commends INEC for Osun Election Transparency

Garba Shehu, former spokesperson to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its transparent electoral process during the Osun State governorship election held on Saturday. Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party was declared the winner with 511,067 votes, defeating Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, who received 404,107 votes.

The results were announced by State Returning Officer, Prof Joshua Ogunwole, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti. Shehu praised INEC Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan, for his humility and restraint amid commendations for the commission's handling of the election.

He reflected on his initial reservations regarding Amupitan's appointment due to a controversial 2020 legal brief but acknowledged that the conduct of the Osun election changed his perception of Amupitan's leadership. Shehu also recognized the contributions of previous INEC chairmen, particularly Prof Attahiru Jega and Prof Mahmood Yakubu, to Nigeria's electoral process.
