NANS Demands Student Protection Amid Osun Political Violence

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed serious concerns regarding the safety of students in Osun State due to escalating political violence ahead of the gubernatorial elections. In a statement signed by its coordinator Adeyemo Josiah, secretary-general Ojetola Babatunde, and public relations officer Tope Olugbemi, NANS announced plans to commence a total peaceful shutdown of academic activities across tertiary institutions in the state.

This decision arises from the alarming increase in political violence, including shootings and intimidation, which has created an unsafe environment for students. NANS highlighted the absence of adequate security arrangements to protect students, particularly those living off-campus.

They urged students to refrain from participating in violent gatherings and warned political actors against exploiting students for electoral gains. NANS emphasized that their proposed shutdown is not politically motivated but a necessary measure to ensure student safety and welfare during the electoral period.
