Tinubu's Acknowledgment of Osun Poll Reflects Democracy

On Thursday in Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State, discussed Nigeria’s democracy and the upcoming 2027 elections, citing the recent Osun gubernatorial election as a significant example. Incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, representing a different party, won the election against Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) by more than 60,000 votes.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's congratulatory message to Adeleke and his description of the election outcome as a “fitting assurance” of democracy's resilience under his administration signify a commitment to democratic principles. Sanwo-Olu noted that this situation contrasts with previous eras when opposition parties faced considerable obstacles in challenging the ruling party.

He remarked on the evolution of democracy in Nigeria, stating that under Tinubu, the ruling party can lose in the South-West without dire consequences, indicating a maturing democratic process.
