Sanwo-Olu: Ruling Party Can Lose Under Tinubu's Leadership

On Thursday, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu asserted that the outcome of the Osun governorship election indicated that the ruling party could lose an election under President Bola Tinubu. Sanwo-Olu made these remarks while discussing Nigeria’s democracy and the preparations for the 2027 elections.

In the recent election, incumbent Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party defeated Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) by over 60,000 votes. Following the election, President Tinubu met with Adeleke at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, congratulating him and describing his re-election as a testament to the flourishing of democracy under his administration.

Sanwo-Olu cited the Osun election as evidence of Tinubu’s commitment to democratic principles, contrasting it with previous periods when opposition parties faced significant challenges from federal power. He stated that under Tinubu, the ruling party could lose in the South-West without dire consequences, reflecting a maturing democracy.
