ITUC-Africa Warns Against Violence Ahead of Osun Election

The African Regional Organisation of the ITUC-Africa issued a warning regarding the potential for electoral unrest in Nigeria due to political and religious incitement, particularly ahead of the Osun State governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026. In a statement from Lomé, Togo, General Secretary Akhator Joel Odigie condemned remarks made by Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East Senatorial District, who was recorded allegedly calling for violence against Accord Party supporters.

Despite Fadahunsi's clarification that he intended to defeat opponents through voting, ITUC-Africa emphasized the dangers of such statements. The organization urged the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to ensure an impartial investigation into the matter.

Additionally, ITUC-Africa expressed concern over inflammatory comments from Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, warning that such rhetoric could exacerbate existing tensions in a country already affected by religious violence. The organization called for protective measures for voters and electoral officials to ensure a peaceful election process.
