Oyo Assembly Approves State Police Bill Framework

On September 30, 2026, the Oyo State House of Assembly passed the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, which aims to create a constitutional framework for the establishment and operation of State Police Services throughout Nigeria. The bill was approved during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin, following a clause-by-clause consideration.

This consideration was initiated after receiving a letter from the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, who transmitted the bill for the Oyo Assembly's approval. Speaker Ogundoyin stated that the passage of this bill would have significant legislative implications for the Oyo Assembly, particularly in developing a comprehensive State Police Law to effectively implement the constitutional framework.

The bill has already been passed by the assemblies of Edo, Rivers, and Osun and requires the concurrence of at least 24 out of the 36 state assemblies to become law.
