Oyo IPAC Urges Peace Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Oyo State issued a warning against political violence and killings as the 2027 general elections approach. In a statement signed by the state chairman, Mr.

Opeyemi Akinad, on Friday, IPAC cautioned politicians to avoid actions that could plunge the state into violence, referencing the infamous "Operation Wetie" crisis of 1962 that devastated Southwestern Nigeria. The council emphasized that Oyo State, known for its progressive stance, should not revert to an era of political violence, arson, and killings.

They recalled the grim consequences of past political turmoil, particularly the violent episodes in the mid-1960s, and urged politicians to prioritize peace over conflict. IPAC condemned the rising temperature of political discourse and called on political aspirants to seek alternative platforms rather than resorting to violence.

The council also urged security agencies to remain vigilant and neutral, advising residents not to allow themselves to be used as agents of violence by desperate politicians.
