FG Denies New Passport Charges for Nigerians in UK

The Federal Government of Nigeria has denied allegations of introducing additional charges for Nigerians applying for international passports in the United Kingdom during the special passport intervention exercise. This clarification follows complaints about delays and inconveniences experienced by applicants at intervention centres, particularly in Manchester.

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo expressed concern over these issues and assured that efforts are being made to resolve the challenges. According to a statement from his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Alao Babatunde, applicants are required to pay only the official fees of $150 for a five-year passport and $230 for a ten-year passport, excluding bank charges.

The minister emphasized that no extra costs have been introduced. Ongoing consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs aim to address the difficulties faced by applicants.

He encouraged the use of the contactless biometric passport application system as a more efficient alternative. The minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to improving services for Nigerians both domestically and abroad.
