The US Department of State has established a five-step process for American citizens who require an urgent passport within 14 days due to a life-or-death family emergency overseas. This emergency passport service is available for individuals who must travel abroad within two weeks because an immediate family member has died, is in hospice care, or is facing a life-threatening illness or injury.

Eligible immediate family members include parents or legal guardians, children, spouses, siblings, and grandparents, while aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives are excluded. Americans traveling abroad for their own medical treatment do not qualify for this service but may schedule a standard urgent appointment if their travel date is within 14 days.

The five steps include gathering documentation of the emergency, translating documents if necessary, securing proof of upcoming international travel, preparing the full application package, and booking an appointment, preferably online.
