Supreme Court Declares PDP Ibadan Convention Illegal

On Thursday, the Supreme Court delivered a split judgment regarding the legality of the Ibadan convention of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). The court ruled that the appeal filed by the faction led by Tanimu Turaki lacked merit.

The lead judgment was delivered by Justice Stephen Adah, who criticized the actions of the party as an abuse of court processes. The court noted that the PDP had filed a fresh action rather than appealing against an order to suspend the convention and provide nomination forms for national chairmanship aspirants.

Justice Sadiq Umar dissented, stating that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain disputes related to the internal affairs of political parties. He emphasized that the appellate court had raised issues of disobedience to court orders without allowing the party to address the matter as required by law.
