Al-Hikmah University Calls on Youths to Reject Thuggery

The Centre for Peace and Security Studies (CPSSS) at Al-Hikmah University in Ilorin, led by Acting Director Dr. Adekola Alao, appealed to Nigerian youths to avoid being recruited as political thugs in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. During a press conference on the 2026 International Day of Peace, themed “Invest in Peace – For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day,” Alao urged young people to reject cultism, hooliganism, gangsterism, and drug abuse, advocating for peaceful participation in the democratic process.

He warned that the use of thugs and the destruction of campaign materials could escalate tensions and violence. Alao also called on politicians to base their campaigns on relevant policies rather than personal attacks.

He encouraged traditional rulers to promote community policing and collaboration among community members to enhance security. Additionally, he stressed the need for cooperation among peace and security stakeholders, including the media and civil society, to foster peace and stability during politically sensitive periods.
