Permanent Secretary Withdraws Bail for El-Rufai Amid Threats

The Permanent Secretary has withdrawn from the process of bailing former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai after reportedly receiving threats that raised concerns about possible intimidation and interference with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). El-Rufai, who served as governor from 2015 to 2023, is under investigation for allegedly misappropriating ₦433 billion during his tenure.

He is scheduled to appear before the EFCC on Wednesday regarding independent corrupt practices related to these allegations. However, it remains uncertain if he will honor the invitation due to ongoing detention by the EFCC.

Additionally, the Department of State Services has filed charges against El-Rufai in the Federal High Court in Abuja for unlawfully intercepting phone communications, with charges dated February 16, 2026. The charges include admitting to unlawful interception during a television interview on February 13, 2026, and failing to report relevant security offenses.
