Gershom Bassey Resigns from PDP Amid Internal Crises

Gershom Bassey, a former senator representing Cross River State's southern senatorial district, announced his resignation from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) on March 12, 2026. In a letter submitted from Ward 9, Calabar South Local Government Area, Bassey cited ongoing internal crises and unresolved conflicts as the primary reasons for his departure.

He expressed that the decision was painful, especially considering his significant investment of resources and commitment to strengthening the party over the years. However, he noted that the PDP has been plagued by deep divisions and prolonged internal crises, which have weakened its unity and made it difficult to remain optimistic about its future.

Bassey criticized the party's elder leaders for their failure to restore discipline and unity, stating that the party is drifting away from the ideals that once united its members. He indicated that he would seek a new political platform to prepare for the upcoming governorship elections.
