Peter Obi Calls for Security After Convoy Blockade in Benue

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), arrived in Jos, Plateau State, on Tuesday after his convoy was disrupted in Benue State. Obi was in Benue to visit families affected by the June 2025 massacre in Yelewata when youths, suspected to be political thugs, blocked his convoy at Gyado Villa along Gboko Road.

This blockade prevented him from continuing to Makurdi and Yelewata. In response, Obi urged security agencies, including the Inspector-General of Police and the Department of State Services, to intervene and ensure that opposition politicians can move freely across the country.

He warned that failure to protect political actors could lead to dangerous situations. Obi called for a focus on pressing national issues such as insecurity, hunger, and poverty in the upcoming 2027 election campaign.

His running mate, Rabi’u Kwankwaso, and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore condemned the blockade and called for international support for opposition politicians in Nigeria.
