Peter Obi Critiques Low NPFL Attendance Impacting Youth

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, expressed his concerns regarding the poor attendance at Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) matches, emphasizing that the country is failing to convert its sporting talent into opportunities for young people. Obi made these comments while attending an NPFL Matchday Six fixture where Ikorodu City secured a 2-0 victory over reigning champions Enugu Rangers at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.

He noted that the stadium, which has a capacity of approximately 10,000, attracted fewer than 2,000 spectators. Obi lamented the state of sports development in Nigeria, stating, “It pained me to see how poorly we are developing sports in Nigeria.” He further asserted that while Nigeria has abundant sporting talent, there is a lack of vision and commitment to harness that talent for youth development, employment, and social transformation.
