Makinde Critiques Nigeria's Petrol Subsidy Debate Focus

Seyi Makinde, the Oyo State Governor and presidential candidate for the African People’s Movement, stated that Nigeria's ongoing debate regarding petrol subsidy is centered on the wrong question. In his September newsletter, "The Business of Governance," he argued for a comprehensive review of the country's petroleum pricing framework.

Makinde emphasized that Nigerians should understand the various factors influencing petrol prices, including crude oil benchmarks, refining costs, exchange rates, logistics, taxes, and other variables. He opposed the notion that Nigerians should pay higher petrol prices to deter smuggling into neighboring countries, asserting that citizens should not bear the costs of governmental failures in border security.

Makinde called for a shift in the debate from whether to restore or maintain the subsidy to whether the current pricing system is appropriate for Nigeria and allows citizens to benefit fairly from their natural resources. He plans to present an alternative petroleum pricing framework in the coming weeks for public assessment.
