Plateau State Reopens Schools Amid Diphtheria Concerns

The Plateau State Government has directed the reopening of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state, effective Monday, September 14, 2026. This decision follows a temporary closure that began on September 7, 2026, aimed at assessing the diphtheria situation and enhancing surveillance and response mechanisms in affected communities.

The announcement was made in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap.

The government emphasized its commitment to safeguarding the health and wellbeing of students, teachers, and the school community while ensuring educational continuity. School authorities are instructed to maintain hygiene and be vigilant for symptoms of diphtheria.

Parents are advised to prioritize personal hygiene and seek medical attention for concerning symptoms, while self-medication is discouraged. The government assured that appropriate health measures would be in place to combat the disease and minimize transmission risks as schools reopen.
