Police Arrest 60 After Assault on Officer in Calabar

The Cross River State Police Command arrested 60 suspects in connection with the alleged assault of a police officer at Watt Market, Calabar, on September 15, 2026. The incident began when the officer attempted to impound a motorcycle after its rider allegedly stepped on his leg while he was on duty on September 11.

During the attempt to apprehend the rider, the officer was reportedly confronted and assaulted by roadside traders, who allegedly aided the rider's escape. The officer claimed that his riot gun was tampered with, his uniform and shoes were torn, and his mobile phone was stolen.

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, ordered an urgent investigation, leading to the deployment of patrol teams and the subsequent arrests. The police emphasized the importance of relying on verified information and stated that normalcy had been restored at the market, with ongoing security monitoring.
