Cross River Police Command Urges Respect for Officers

The Cross River State Police Command has issued a warning to Nigerians against assaulting police officers while they perform their lawful duties. ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the state Police Public Relations Officer, addressed the public in Calabar, expressing concern over the rising incidents of assault, obstruction, and violent resistance against officers.

He reminded citizens that Section 98 of the Police Act 2020 makes it an offense to assault or obstruct a police officer, punishable by a fine of N500,000, imprisonment for six months, or both. Eitokpah stated that while respect for police is essential, it should not equate to immunity from accountability.

He encouraged citizens to report any misconduct by officers through appropriate channels, such as the National Human Rights Commission. Eitokpah called for a balance where citizens understand that frustration does not justify violence against officers, and officers must act professionally and respect human dignity.

He emphasized that protecting both police officers and citizens is crucial for a law-governed society.
