Nigerian Police Warn Travelers Against Visa Scams, Arrest Syndicate Defrauding Victims

The Nigerian Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) has issued a warning to intending travelers about visa scams, emphasizing the importance of following due process when applying for travel visas. DSP Ovi Ewhubar, the PSFU spokesperson, cautioned the public against fraudsters who target visa applicants, posing as embassy officials or agents.

Scammers often use fake websites and demand quick payments, promising guaranteed visa approvals or expedited processes. A recent police operation in Lagos State led to the arrest of a syndicate in Ago Okota area, accused of defrauding the public of N500 million.

The suspects, aged between 23 and 36, allegedly operated under the guise of an education consultancy, deceiving around 100 victims with false promises of Canadian and Australian work visas. The PSFU warned visa applicants to be wary of individuals or agents claiming to guarantee visas through unusual fast-track processes and unofficial payment channels, advising verification of visa-related information directly from official sources to avoid falling victim to scams.
