Police Officers Detained for Extorting ICPC Chairman

Four police officers from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have been detained for allegedly extorting ₦53,000 from Dr. Musa Aliyu, the chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The incident occurred during an illegal stop-and-search operation in Abuja, specifically around the Banex area in Wuse. Police Commissioner Sanusi disclosed that the officers, who were described as "thieves" and had abandoned their designated duties, set up an unauthorized checkpoint to extort money from the ICPC chairman without recognizing his identity.

They compelled him to withdraw ₦53,000 from a point-of-sale terminal, which they later shared among themselves. The police investigation revealed that the officers formed a criminal gang, and the Commissioner has vowed to ensure that the gang leader is arrested and that all involved will face severe punishment, including dismissal.
