Police Clarify Role on Roaming Cattle in Abuja

The Nigerian Police Force, represented by spokesperson Ani Iniedu, clarified that it is not their responsibility to control cows roaming the streets of Abuja. This statement was made during a joint security spokespersons’ briefing in response to concerns about the increasing presence of cattle in public spaces.

Iniedu explained that the responsibility for managing animals, including cattle, lies with the relevant environmental authorities, specifically the Ministry or Department of the Environment. The police will only intervene if the animals cause damage to property, trespass, or are involved in other offences.

Iniedu stated, “If that is the case, it is reported to the nearest police station.” He also mentioned that the police would investigate any formal complaints regarding offences committed by roaming cattle, emphasizing that proactive searches for cows are not within their mandate.
