Gunmen Kill Two Police Officers in Rivers State Attack

On Monday night at approximately 9 PM, gunmen attacked a security checkpoint in the Obio Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, resulting in the deaths of two police officers. The officers were conducting routine stop-and-search operations along the Mbodo Aluu and Obiri Kwere road when they came under heavy gunfire from the assailants, who fled the scene immediately after the attack.

The Rivers State Police Command announced a manhunt for the perpetrators less than 24 hours after the incident. In a related development, a suspect identified as Austin Emenik, also known as Oyibo, was arrested, and authorities recovered a locally made pistol, four single-barrel guns, and five live cartridges from him.

Videos circulating on social media depicted the slain officers lying in a pool of blood at the checkpoint. The public relations officer of the state, ASP Bless Kaborlo Agab, confirmed the deaths and stated that investigations have begun to identify and arrest those responsible.

The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, visited the scene on Tuesday morning as part of the management team's assessment of the attack.
