Across Nigeria, the Police Force has rolled out a coordinated nationwide enforcement initiative targeting vehicles with obscured, defaced, or unregistered registration plates. Directed by Inspector General Olatunji Disu, this operation engages state police commands in efforts to strengthen vehicle identification and combat criminal activities.
According to police authorities, criminals have exploited concealed registration plates to elude detection and perpetrate offences. Various state commands have already deployed their own enforcement operations under this directive.
The Bauchi State Police Command initiated its drive on Monday, with Commissioner of Police Sani Omolori Aliyu overseeing the effort across all 20 local government areas through area commanders and divisional police officers tasked with enforcing compliance. Similarly, Olugbenga Adepoju, Rivers State's Commissioner of Police, spearheaded an enforcement exercise spanning Port Harcourt and environs, conducting operations at locations such as Gra Junction and along Aba Road.
Kogi State's Commissioner of Police, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, launched a comparable statewide operation focused on the same violations. According to statements from police authorities, vehicles that violate regulations will undergo impounding and subsequent investigation in line with applicable legislation.
State traffic departments collaborate with officers to track adherence to the directive. Rivers State saw multiple violators arrested and brought before a mobile court housed at the police traffic section.
Across all operations, police statements maintain that criminal elements are the target—not compliant drivers—positioning these efforts as essential security measures. The enforcement push stems from Inspector General Disu's explicit mandate to bolster public safety and prevent criminals from deploying unidentifiable vehicles in unlawful operations.
State police spokespersons confirmed that divisional officers and area commanders received clear instructions to enforce full compliance within their operational zones.
