Osun Poll Integrity Boosted by Competition and Tech

The Athena Election Observatory stated that the recent Osun State governorship election, held on August 15, 2026, was safeguarded by intense political competition and technological upgrades from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party won the election with 511,067 votes, defeating Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who received 444,815 votes.

The observatory, established by the Athena Centre for Policy and Leadership, noted that the rivalry among major political parties made large-scale electoral manipulation more difficult. The electorate grew from 1,952,387 registered voters in 2022 to 2,339,544 in 2026, a 19.8% increase, with accredited voters rising from 827,218 to 1,010,684.

Despite increased mobilization, the margin of victory widened from 28,344 votes in 2022 to 66,252 votes in 2026. The AEO praised INEC's use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and other technological measures for enhancing transparency and auditability in the electoral process.
