Akintayo Calls for Reform in Nigeria's Health System

Akintayo, the former president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), expressed concerns regarding Nigeria's health system, which has historically performed poorly, ranking around the 120s globally. He emphasized that achieving universal health coverage is essential for a healthier future, which requires adequate health professionals and appropriate responsibilities aligned with community needs.

Akintayo pointed to the UK's investment in community pharmacies during COVID-19, which transformed them into primary care points, as a model for Nigeria. He argued that community pharmacies in Nigeria could provide essential services, including screening for non-communicable diseases and maternal health education.

However, he stressed the importance of creating an enabling environment, providing necessary training, and establishing regulatory guidelines for pharmacists. Akintayo noted that many Nigerian health professionals leave the country for better working conditions, highlighting the government's responsibility to regulate the health system effectively.
