Asaba Residents Protest Power Outage and Transformer Fees

Residents of Fear God Street, Bonsaac, Asaba, Delta State, protested against the Benin Electricity Distribution Company and the local transformer committee for failing to restore power after a faulty transformer was not repaired. They claimed to have contributed millions of naira for transformer repairs but remained without power months after the latest repair.

The residents were reportedly asked to make additional contributions for a new 750KVA transformer. Mr. Michael Morah, chairman of the Bonsaac 1 Transformer Committee, denied allegations of misappropriating funds, stating that all contributions were directed to the community's bank account.

He mentioned that the transformer failed on July 25 after previous repair attempts. Amid rising complaints, a panel led by Mr. Okolo Gred was formed to investigate the allegations against Morah, who has served as chairman for over a decade.

Gred stated that the committee's report was completed but not yet discussed due to Morah's failure to convene a meeting.
