Anambra Consumers' Group Suspends Protest Over Power Issues

The Electric Consumers' Rights Network, led by Osita Obi, announced the suspension of a planned protest scheduled for Saturday, March 14, in Awka, Anambra State. The protest aimed to draw attention to prolonged power outages and high estimated bills from the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company and its subsidiary, First Power Distribution Company.

Obi cited security concerns as the primary reason for the suspension, noting that the decision followed alerts from security agencies, including the Nigeria Police and the Anambra State Government, particularly ahead of the governor's inauguration on March 17. Obi emphasized that the group did not want to jeopardize peace and stability in the state, especially after receiving threats related to the protest.

Instead of the protest, the group urged residents to attend a town hall meeting scheduled for March 18 to discuss the electricity situation. The Anambra State Police Command had previously advised the group to seek constructive dialogue with relevant authorities rather than resorting to street demonstrations.
