Nigeria Urged to Implement Cancer Patient Navigation Services

Project Pink Blue has urged the Federal Government and stakeholders to implement cancer patient navigation services across Nigeria to enhance breast cancer care. The initiative, led by Runci C.

W. Chideb, aims to address the challenges faced by patients, including fear, stigma, and financial barriers, which often lead to delays in treatment and abandonment of care.

In 2022, Nigeria recorded 32,278 new breast cancer cases and 16,332 deaths, with younger women particularly affected. The patient navigation program is designed to provide structured support, helping patients understand their diagnosis, access referrals, and maintain treatment appointments.

The program is part of the National Cancer Control Plan for 2026-2030. Joachin Ani and Nnenna Train emphasized the importance of understanding patient navigation to improve outcomes.

The project also integrates mobile technology through the Pink Blue app, which aims to reduce uncertainty for newly diagnosed patients. Olushola Akapo highlighted the empathetic role of patient navigators in supporting individuals through their cancer journey.
