Premier League Defends Chelsea's £10M Fine Amid Controversy

The Premier League has responded to calls for Chelsea FC to be stripped of their 2017 EPL title following a £47 million illegal payments scandal. The league emphasized that the £10 million fine imposed on Chelsea was a record sanction and that the investigation was properly managed.

The payments in question were made to agents and intermediaries from 2011 to 2018 during Roman Abramovich's ownership. After Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital acquired Chelsea in 2022, they voluntarily reported these irregular transactions.

Among the payments, £5.6 million was linked to an unregistered agent involved in Eden Hazard's transfer. Critics, including former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, have expressed dissatisfaction with the fine, especially since Everton received a points deduction for breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters clarified that Chelsea's case was different from PSR violations and that even with the illegal payments, Chelsea did not breach PSR thresholds. The Football Association's inquiry initially resulted in a suspended six-point deduction, which was later overturned.
