National Peace Accord Signed Ahead of 2027 Elections

The first National Peace Accord was signed by political parties and candidates for the 2027 general elections in Abuja, marking the start of electioneering. The accord mandates signees to engage in issue-based campaigns and to avoid violence, hate speech, and misinformation.

Despite previous accords being often disregarded, this one is deemed significant for maintaining decorum during the elections. The signing ceremony, organized by the National Peace Committee in partnership with The Kukah Centre, included notable attendees such as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Joash Amupitan, and various presidential and National Assembly candidates.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. Other signatories included Peter Obi, Adewole Adebayo, and Omoyele Sowore.

However, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde were absent. The event also featured goodwill messages from diplomatic representatives, including the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria.
