NSE Urges Engineers to Prioritize Safety Over Profit

At the 2026 Annual Dinner, Induction of New Corporate Members and Paper Presentation held at Jogor Centre in Ibadan, Ali Allimasuya Rabiu, President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), urged newly inducted corporate members to prioritize public safety over profit. He attributed Nigeria's frequent structural failures to the use of substandard materials and ethical compromises.

Rabiu, represented by Engineer Ezekiel Ojekunle, stated that the primary duty of engineers is to ensure the security of lives and property. He called for mentorship among senior engineers to guide younger professionals.

Guest speaker Ismaila Olasunkanmi, a professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, discussed the ethical challenges facing the engineering profession in Nigeria. He emphasized the need for engineers to resist client pressures for substandard work to prevent building collapses.

Ayokunnu Ojedele, chairman of NSE Ibadan Branch, described the event as a call to service.
